Ready For The Ice Storm of 2010? Now I Am.

Earlier this summer was a big moment for me when it came to disaster/emergency planning. I was working on my October feature story, The Rules of Survival, for Popular Mechanics. There I was writing about people who survived disasters because they prepared for them, and then I started asking myself: was I prepared? “Sort of,” was the best I could do. But what if a blizzard or ice storm left us marooned in our home for days. Was I ready for that? Well, no.

I have three very young children. My house has no fireplace, and my heating system is basically tied to the success of the power grid.

I’ve been writing about disasters for years, I’ve been preaching preparation, but I wasn’t prepared for the most likely disaster to strike my home and family. I was no better than any other unprepared person, in fact, I was worse. I knew better.

The October Pop Mech piece was a wake up call. I needed a generator!
